Environmental Science Journal for Kids Contest (Science and ELA Teachers)

Enter the Edcite – Environmental Science Journal for Kids Contest for a chance to win a $30 Starbucks gift card!

Environmental Science Journal for Kids adapts scientific research for a student audience. Their founder Tanya Dimitrova says, “Environmental Science Journal for Kids exists because young people have the right to know about the state of the world they are inheriting from us!”

Edcite partnered with this amazing resource last year (read about our partnership). Now we are excited to offer our teachers this contest!

How to Enter the Contest
The contest runs from October 17 – November 17.

1. Pick an Environmental Science Journal for Kids article.

2. Use the article to create an Edcite assignment for either elementary, middle school, or high school.

3. Add the SJEdcite2017 tag to the end of the assignment title.

4. Share it into the Edcite public library.

5. Assign it to students & spread the word to other teachers.

Teachers whose assignments have the most student submissions in elementary, middle school, and high school by 11:59pm on November 17 will win! Three teachers in each school level will receive a $30 Starbucks gift card.

Curriculum Mapping Hackathon

Last month we posted about a new effort Edcite has launched in partnership with Camara Ireland and educators all across Ireland: The Curriculum Mapping Project.

The project aims to unlock resources that teachers are creating in various places, by translating the educational standards. All around the world students are expected to do many of the same skills. Whether we call it math or maths, students will be expected to master 2+2=4. Whether we tag the content as Common Core, Irish Curriculum, Florida State Standards, or any local context of learning objectives, at the end of the day we are teaching a lot of the same content–content that could be better shared.

We recently hosted an event, where we invited Irish teachers to go through the American Common Core standards and identify the matching Irish Curriculum learning objectives.

Great contributions from all teachers at the event!

We recognize (or recognise :)) that teachers know best when it comes to how the various standards or learning objectives align, which is why this project is based on the contribution of teachers.

You can take a look at the progress that has been made with mapping the Irish Curriculum to the Common Core State Standards on these documents. Also, feel free to join in on the efforts and begin filling in the relevant Irish Curriculum learning objectives. We are excited to see this process going so well in Ireland and look forward to working with our partners in other countries to continue to make sharing digital resources on the global scale easier.

The potential for sharing on Edcite is great and although the project of aligning learning expectations on a global scale may seem daunting, it can be done one learning objective at a time. As Nicole Mullen from Camara Ireland said at the Curriculum Mapping Hackathon, When we all work together on a small section of a project it suddenly becomes manageable. By working together on a large global scale project we can open so many resources, and seeing so many teachers realise that today was fantastic.”

If you are interested in learning more about the efforts to localize resources to your area, please reach out to julia@edcite.com.

Currently Edcite allows teachers to tag assignments to the Common Core–after we finish this Irish Curriculum mapping project, teachers will be able to find and tag content to either the Common Core or the Irish Curriculum. Here’s a sneak peak of some of the resources this mapping project is unlocking (click on the picture of the Edcite question to open the question or assignment).
